8/25/2017 - Standing Rock Legal Update & Urgent Call to Action
|
Hosted by Lakota People's Law Project.
Chase Iron Eyes will speak at La Peña Cultural Center in Berkeley on Friday, 8/25 at 7pm. Marvelous speaker! Detailed info below: It's time to drop the charges against water protectors, and prosecute Energy Transfer Partners and TigerSwan! You are invited for a very special evening with attorneys Chase Iron Eyes and Daniel Sheehan of the Lakota People's Law Project. In spring of 2016, a movement was born at Standing Rock. When the Dakota Access pipeline (DAPL) was rerouted from its original path north of Bismarck to the reservation, endangering the tribe's water source, Lakota elders asked allies to rally to their cause, symbolized by the phrase, “Mni Wiconi—Water is Life.” Hundreds of thousands answered the call. Now, revelations of illegal paramilitary tactics employed by private security firms against Chase and other peaceful water protectors at Standing Rock underscore that our very democracy is at stake. This forum provides a unique opportunity to engage with two of the most prominent voices of their generations. You will hear dramatic first-hand accounts of this historic movement and the legal battles being waged in the Dakotas. We invite you to join Chase and Danny for this exceptional event. Together, let's answer and advance their call to unite at this critical hour. About our speakers: Chase Iron Eyes is a citizen of Standing Rock who has served as a spokesperson for the NoDAPL movement. On February 1, 2017, after being intensely surveilled by militarized private security forces, he was arrested and charged with two felonies by North Dakota law enforcement. Daniel Sheehan is the president of the Romero Institute and a renowned constitutional rights attorney. He is serving as the chief defense counsel for Chase Iron Eyes and preparing a proactive legal strategy.
